Dear Friend,
This week's book fair may be in west London, but we'll try to span the globe in our offerings. From the papyrus-clogged channels of the Victora Nile, Benjamin Eastwood recounts an expedition in 1916; Ethiopia provides a prayer scroll, and a priggish, ex-Etonian bookworm records his passage to India from 1828. There's a delicious watercolour bookmark from Mary Hogarth and a manuscript from the circle around Anne Lister, aka Halifax's own 'Gentleman Jack'. But if it's London you crave then we're privileged to offer David Garnett's copy of his Bloomsbury friend Virginia Woolf's first modernist master work.
Best wishes,
Christian

Early 18th century edition of Rochester’s poems in what appears to be a contemporary panelled calf trade binding, probably from the publisher Jacob Tonson. First published in this form in 1691 by Tonson, this was the second edition to be published in the 18th century and fourth overall. Rochester’s reputation as human being and poet has attracted scores of assessments and comments: Andrew Marvell called him "the best English satirist," and Voltaire referred to him as "the man of genius, the grea…… Read more
