A Yorkshire-slanted mostly dissenting sammelband which contains an otherwise unrecorded Leeds imprint by ‘John Chapman’ of Ilkley from 1787, and a London sermon on the Lisbon earthquake from 1755 as well as five other imprints.
Unadorned full calf binding from the 1780s, a little scuffed but sound. The collection begins with the Sheffield-born divine and philosopher’s Essay on Redemption followed by an extract from Richard Price’s response to letters from Joseph Priestley. The unrecorded Leeds imprint, John Chapman’s Triumph of Truth follows a title page to another unrecorded Leeds imprint by the same publisher - but that is all that’s present. The book concludes with a Keighley sermon and finally Thomas Gibbons at Haberdashers on the Lisbon earthquake, an earlier imprint than the rest of the book’s contents. Two Yorkshire bibliophiles from the 1780s have asserted their ownership of the pamphlet texts found here: H O Dawson of Baildon near Bradford; John Prior following the gift of ‘H Davy’ and ‘J J’ who passes judgement on Balguy’s contradictory arguments.
