A Dictionary of the English Language Volume I and II - Johnson's Dictionary

Two large quarto volumes from the Sixth Edition of this classic work. Both bound in contemporary 18th century calf and handsomely rebacked with gilt decorated spines panelled in red and dark green morocco labels. Full page frontispiece depicting Samuel Johnson in volume I. Text occasionally lightly browned. Both volumes sound, square and unmarked. A very pleasing pair.

Samuel Johnson’s portrait by Cook after the artist Sir Joshua Reynolds, is dated 21 August 1786. Johnson died on 13 December 1784, and this is the first edition of his Dictionary to be published after his death and the first to have a portrait.
