Owned by the London painter turned interior decorator and cabinet maker, George Morant a revised 1805 edition of this work by Irish clergyman, Matthew Pilkington, first published in London in 1770.

Pilkington’s text revised and enlarged by Swiss painter Henry Fuseli. 19th century quarter red roan over green cloth very good, titled and dated in gilt to handsome 5 panelled spine; a little bumped and rubbed to corners and spine. Marbled text block edges. Marbled endpapers unmarked, just cracking over front gutter. Previous ownership inscription to title page reads ‘Geo. Morant / 1825’. Leaves a little age spotted to preliminaries and very occasionally throughout the text block which is otherwise square and sound. 693 pp plus index. Printed by John Crowther.

A little pencilled annotation which may be Morant’s.

George Morant (1868-1846) worked out of Wimpole Street and his business survived into the 20th century.

Known as Pilkington's Dictionary, this work became integral to art history, providing the reader with detailed biographies of a host of notable painters whilst critically ranking their abilities, as well as providing insightful critiques of the art market in the Netherlands and England.
