Playbill for a performance by the legendary Swedish soprano Jenny Lind who has brought to a wider audience in recent years as the would-be lover of the ‘Greatest Showman’, P T Barnum. Her concert in Sheffield in March 1849 was actually one of the first times that she appeared on the same platform as her future husband, Otto Goldschmidt. Lind’s wildly successful concert tour of the United States at the invitation of P T Barnum took place the following year, accompanied by her Sheffield conductor, Marcus Benedict, who was shortly to be replaced by Goldschmidt. ‘Lindmania’ gripped England during the late 1840s and the soprano performed several times in northern England although we can find no other record of playbills relating to her performance in Sheffield.

DESCRIPTION: Playbill (19x24cm) laid down on card for its own preservation; extensively chipped and marked but the text remains intact. Central fold.
