First Dublin edition of the best known work by this Edinburgh educated physician, friend of Lady Mary Wortley and proponent of the health giving qualities of golf!

Scuffed but sound contemporary calf binding, rubbed to leather surface; partial spine label; childish pencil notes to front flyleaf from 1838 - ‘This book is all nonsense’. And more pencil drawings opposite title page with the signature ‘James Burt Ballinderry’ - presumably the village on the border of Country Londonderry and Tyrone. A little worming to upper outer corner of final leaves and more pencil sketches of James Burt on horseback. Collates: pp. xii, 276.

James Mackenzie (1682-1761) studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh, and this book was first published in Edinburgh in 1758. In the third edition of 1760 he included an appendix on the treatment of smallpox.
