Interleaved and annotated copy in near very good condition bound in half cream calf over marbled boards. Endpapers a little age spotted displaying the previous ownership details of a Sussex historian, ‘From the Library of Lindsay Fleming, Aldwick Grange, Bognor Regis’. Text block interleaved throughout with alternating blank leaves which contain multiple contemporary handwritten notes. ‘From the author’ written to top of p.159. A square, sound and clean working copy. 159 -234pp. collated and complete.

Originally published in the ‘Transactions of the Linnean Society’ in 1818 under the title ‘Synopsis of the British Species of Rosa’, this work established Woods' reputation as a systematic botanist.

Joseph Woods FLS, FGS (24 August 1776 – 9 January 1864) was an English Quaker, architect, botanist and geologist. He was a member of the Society of Antiquaries, an Honorary Member of the Society of British Architects, a Fellow of the Linnean Society and a Fellow of the Geological Society.
