Four great poems, owned and annotated by the writer and Bloomsbury group member, Roger Senhouse who has noted on the flyleaf: ‘Roger Senhouse Review Copy Jan ‘45’ - a puzzling inscription since the book was published the previous autumn.

Senhouse’s annotations are mostly explanatory, so he has translated Eliot’s two epigraphs opposite the first page of Burnt Norton; he has given a date to each poem and inserted glosses for Eliot’s more abstruse vocabulary - ‘appetency’ - ‘the state of desire - natural state of inclination to things; includes both dream and volition’. Similarly ‘hebetude’, ‘periphrastic’ and others. Perhaps 20 annotations through the text.

Although ten years his junior, Senhouse was, like Eliot, the director of a publishing house (Secker and Warburg where he published Orwell) and they moved in overlapping London literary circles. However we can’t immediately locate any published review of Four Quartets written by Senhouse.

DESCRIPTION: A very good copy titled in gilt to spine; a little dustiness to endpapers. Clean and crisp text, with Senhouse’s annotations in pencil. 44 pp. The jacket is not price-clipped but browned to extremities and small loss at the head of the spine.
