Germinal is widely considered ‘the most important single contribution Zola made to literature’ (Harold Bloom) and its story of the struggle for social change continues to thrill and inspire subsequent generations. It is an uncommon first edition in this, it’s most attractive first edition format.

DESCRIPTION: Octavo in brown textured cloth, blocked in gilt; a little shelf lean and bumping to corners. Floral endpapers with the bookplate of ‘Alfred Tomlinson’. A single leaf of adverts precedes the half title which has an old owner’s name: ‘R.M. Davy’; title page with the earliest owner’s name: ‘Fred Plimsoll July 10/ 85’, pp464 with a single terminal leaf of adverts followed by the 20 pages of Vizetelly adverts dated to May 1885.
