A volume simply teeming with the pencilled annotations and inserts of a scholar recognised as a specialist in the works of James Joyce; the co-editor of ‘James Joyce and Modern Literature’ and the ‘James Joyce Broadsheet’. Joyce himself insisted that each word, each sentence of his novel had several meanings and that the 'ideal lecteur' should devote his lifetime to it - and this volume contains c122 laid in, jotted on page markers and perhaps c5000 handwritten pencilled notes and annotations throughout the text and margins.
Much more than just a casual reader notes, the previous owner’s annotations carry scholarly weight offering unique perspectives not found in standard reference texts while navigating the volume’s multilingual puns and layered meanings. Many of the page markers allude to the theme of friendship, ‘our mutual friends 65.35’, ‘his friend’s leave 83,30’, ‘a friend in need 109.17’, ‘a true friend 115.08’, ‘best friend 124.18’, ‘our friend 131.21’, ‘reported to be friendly with the police 137.19’, ‘boyfriends 460.70’, ‘for our friend ’558.69’ and so on throughout.
