Paperbacked first edition in very good condition inscribed to title page ‘To Alistair with love from Hermione, September 1989’. Laid in is a handwritten note headed ‘Hardistys Farm’ written to ‘Dear Alistair, Almost 100 years ago you very kindly asked me which Willa Cather books I didn’t have, They are.....’. The volume comes from the library of a retired University of Leeds academic and laid in is a handwritten note from the author pointing to Chapter 10, footnote 11, p.388 which reads, ‘I was alerted to this connection by an inspired unpublished lecture on Cather by Alistair [.....]. 409 pp. A great association copy which explores the impact of one of the great American writers of the century.

Dame Hermione Lee is a British biographer, literary critic and academic. She is a former President of Wolfson College, Oxford, and a former Goldsmiths' Professor of English Literature in the University of Oxford and Professorial Fellow of New College. She is a Fellow of the British Academy and of the Royal Society of Literature.
