First edition in a handsome half green calf over marbled boards, delicately tooled in gilt to 6 panelled spine and titled in gilt over red ground. In good plus condition; shelf worn to corners; spine top a little scuffed; boards rubbed. Marbled text block edges and marbled endpapers front and rear clean and fresh. Light spotting to preliminaries and rear endpapers. Front pastedown reveals a library label belonging to ‘Hahnemann Epps’ (1843-1916), a prominent member of the Epps family who were famous in Victorian Britain as both homeopathic physicians and the founders of Epps’ Cocoa. Frontispiece in very good condition. Maps and illustrations throughout unmarked. Text block very sound. A feint aroma of smoke noted. 520 pp.
