RESERVED - Sclater’s commentary on Thessalonians bound in a pleasingly unsophisticated, entirely unrestored 17th century calf binding in which the bookbinder has introduced 16th century manuscript waste between the endpapers.

Polished calf binding with raised spine bands and decorated with blind lines; old cracking to the leather with minor loss at the tail of the spine. No pastedowns, but strips of manuscript waste front and rear, bound in before the first and last flyleaves. These have writing on one side only, displaying an attractive Anglicana script and mentioning the word ‘England’, also perhaps ‘Kent’, probably legal in subject matter. Title page within a woodcut surround; small burn mark to foreedge which carries through to a couple of subsequent leaves. Fingermarking close to foreedge and some staining to early pages but the text collates complete, with the second title page also present. Noted on collation, ink blot M2-3. Page-long manuscript notes by ‘George Thornborrow’ to the verso of the final flyleaf and on the verso of the second piece of manuscript waste. Writing around 1700, Mr Thornborrow seems to be recording sermon topics: ‘Mr Lowther subject Acts.... Mr Metcalfe subiect... Mr Goards subiect...’ finally recording a family death in 1703.

William Sclater (1575-1626) was an Engish clergyman educated at Eton and Kings College Cambridge, preferred to Pitminster, Somerset where he remained for most of the rest of his life writing and publishing sermons and commentary with a strong Puritan bias.
