The author’s own copy, with his verbal annotations in ink and pencil to the many the text pages, as well as his manuscript notes to the endpapers. These largely consist of corrections and several additions to the printed text, providing further information regarding the access and use of the records discussed, for example, “The British Directory for 1793 contains a list of officers with date of commission”, and, “If a sailor died on board ship the Treasurer’s Pay Book gives name of relation to whom paid”. Also loosely laid in is a slip of paper with an ink manuscript note describing the usefulness of another early naval record.

A guide to the Admiralty Records held at the Public Record Office, designed for the use of genealogists. Volume VIII in the publisher’s “Genealogist’s Pocket Library” series.

First edition. Author’s own copy. Publisher’s original purple cloth with titles in gilt to the upper board and spine. Bottom edge untrimmed. Author’s signature in ink to the front pastedown. A very good copy, the binding square and firm with a touch of a wear to the corners and spine ends. The contents with the occasional light spot of foxing are otherwise in very good order.
