First Edition in very good condition in very good dust jacket with the author’s original 138 pp. autograph manuscript of the first 5 chapters of the novel which was made into a movie in 1963 by Metro Goldwyn starring Jane Fonda, Peter Finch, and Angela Lansbury.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Blue cloth boards, endpapers and text block in very good condition. ‘Claire Brown’ neatly written to top of front free flyleaf. Unclipped dust jacket in very good condition, very modestly age toned to inside top. Accompanying manuscript written to the recto of each lined leaf and numbered to top right. In a neat cursive throughout with remarkably few rulings out or corrections. Each of the five chapters secured individually with original paper clips. Interesting differences noted on collation in the format to that of the finally published volume.

SUSAN ERTZ (1887-1985) was an Anglo-American writer born in England to American parents who shuttled her to and fro between the two countries, a process she continued in her long fiction writing career. In the Cool of the Day came late in her life and achieved great success through the MGM adaptation starring Jane, Peter Finch and Angela Lansbury.
