Three works that form part of the outpouring of commentary and mourning that followed the execution of Charles I in January 1649. The most famous of these works, Eikon Basilike appears first but lacks its portrait. The third text in the work, the Apophthegms, may be the version that appeared alongside this edition of the Eikon. Between the two imprints is a much scarcer work by one of the most influential churchmen in Scotland, a founder of the Kirk, Alexander Henderson (1583-1646) which contains the letters and papers in Henderson’s controversy with Charles I relating to Episcopacy.

The three texts are nicely bound together in half sheep over marbled boards with marbled endpapers, likely 19th century with the initials of ‘J.K.P. 1804’ on the second flyleaf. The printed texts appears as follows:

1 Eikon Basilike, The Pourtraicture of His Sacred Majestie, 1649, By W.D. in R.M. Stained title page; lacking portrait but with the portrait of Prince Charles between O5/O6: A4; B8-Q8; R4 - ESTC R224767

2 The Papers which Passed at New-Castle Betwixt His Sacred Majestie and Mr Alex: Henderson, 1649, R Royston: frontispiece by William Marshall, A-D7, contemporary blank in place of final errata leaf as sometimes found WING 2535

3 Apophthegmata Aurea, Regia, Carolina. Apophthegms, 1649, William Dugard for Francis Eglesfield, A-C8; D3, wanting final blank; title page within border ESTC R331
