In very good condition. Second edition of this autobiographical work written by Charlotte Elizabeth Tonna, a popular Victorian English writer and novelist who wrote as Charlotte Elizabeth. Her work focused on promoting women's rights and evangelical Protestantism. She went deaf at the age of 10. Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote of her memoir Personal Recollections, ‘We know of no piece of autobiography in the English language which can compare with this in richness of feeling and description and power of exciting interest’.

PHYSICAL CONDITION: Decoratively embossed contemporary cloth boards titled in gilt to spine, a little bumped to corners, minimal surface abrasion as expected. Modest spine lean. Front pastedown contains a ‘John Rylands University Library of Manchester Burney Collection’ (withdrawn) label and a bookseller’s stamp reading ‘Anderson & Son King St, Manchester’. Inscribed ‘Jane Shipley’ to front flyleaf. Illustrated frontispiece protected by tissue guard in very good condition. Written in pink ink by previous owner to title page ‘Mrs Charlotte Elizabeth Tonna 1790 -1846’. Text block clean and unmarked throughout. 390 pp. plus List of Publications.
