HORACE ANNESLEY POWYS’ ANNOTATED COPY Poems

Third Edition in fair condition. Ownership signature reads ‘Annesley Powys, St John’s Coll, Oxon alongside the date 1878’. Research reveals later positions as Assistant Master at Leeds Grammar School 1875-83 and Vicar of Meanwood, Leeds, 1883. Arthur Hugh Clough was similarly an alumnus of Oriel College, Oxford.

PHYSICAL CONDITION: Original green cloth boards ruled in gilt and black to edges, decoratively embossed surrounding the initials AHC to front board. Spine titled in gilt. A little shelf worn to all edges and a little frayed along hinges and spine top and tail. Dark brown endpapers front and rear. Front free endpaper suffers loss to excised 3 cm square to top right. Cracking over gutters front and rear. Title page contains hand written pencilled notes relating to pp. 98 and 101. Further annotations and underlining in pencil throughout. The text block is completely split from the spine into 2 sections at p.144 but remains firmly within the binding. 345 pp plus index and advertisements. Printed by Spottiswoode and Co.
