CIVIL RIGHTS PHOTOGRAPHER DAN BUDNIK’S CORRECTED COPY: Everybody says Freedom: A History of the Civil Rights Movement in Songs and Pictures

Presentation copy from Pete Seeger to one of the book’s photographers with Dan Budnik’s handwritten corrections to the North Carolina and Alabama locations of several of his best-known images of the civil rights era, as well as a letter from Pete Seeger’s wife presenting this copy of the book.

First edition, a fine copy in a very good jacket with fading to the spine. Inscribed by Seeger on the front flyleaf: ‘for Dan and Kirsten! thanks for great photographs Stay well, both of you Pete [banjo drawing]. Toshi Seeger’s letter is written on headed paper and mentions the quality of the photographic images in the second edition of this book but, unable to find a copy, presents this one instead, ‘Love Toshi’. Seeger’s corrections are to an image of a ‘Mass Meeting’ in ‘Selma’ - not Montgomery as the print location states (p20) with further emendations to a photograph of Fred Shuttleworth (Selma not Birmingham); another Alabama/ Selma correction (p129) and a striking image of Dr King to which Budnik adds the location ‘Washington March’ and corrects the date of the image with one further correction.

Provenance: from the estate of Dan Budnik (1933-2020), a photographer noted for his portraits of artists and photographs of the Civil Rights Movement. Pete Seeger (1919-2014) was an American singer song-writer and a crucial early mentor to Bob Dylan.
