FIGARO IN LONDON – 1832, 1833 AND 1834 BOUND AS ONE

Founded as a weekly on 10th December 1831, Figaro in London used satire in humorous articles and illustrations to critique various aspects of English society, including the aristocracy, parliament, and the British army. The magazine included theatre news, political poetry, anecdotes, and commentary on wide ranging issues of the time. It is also noted for its association with the Reform movement and is considered a precursor to the more famous satirical magazine, Punch. 

This quarto volume in very good condition contains 3 distinct volumes containing issues numbered 1 -160 (excluding issue 110) from the years 1832, 1833 and 1834 bound as one in half marbled boards over brown calf, new spine label. The six panelled spine is titled in gilt over black ground Figaro in London Vol 1 1832 (although as noted does contain 3 volumes). Each individual yearly volume commences with a title page and a preface. The text block is in very good, sound condition, endpapers clean. Some age spotting to individual leaves as expected, particularly issue 25. One clean tear noted on collation to one leaf of issue 144 which does not compromise the text. Each individual issue is 4 pp. in length and abundantly illustrated throughout. Printed by W. Molineux. Each annual volume comprises:
