Scarce First Edition of this interesting tale of hunting and racing in England in the early 19th century. Illustrated throughout. Written by Henry Hall Dixon (1822-1870), a sporting writer known as 'The Druid', a spectator of all kinds of sport.

Original 1859 First Edition rebound in a handsome half red calf over marbled boards. Hand written note to front flyleaf reads ‘Bound October 1860’. Relaid spine in six compartments lettered in gilt. A little bumped to corners and spine ends, otherwise in very good, sound condition. Attractive marbled text block edges. Marbled endpapers crisp and clean. Previous owner’s name hand written to front flyleaf reads ‘Edward H U Pickering’ dated 1860. Illustrated with a frontispiece titled ‘Dick Christian at 80’ and a vignette of ‘James Robinson’ to title page. Both leaves are a little spotted and age toned. Six additional plates throughout all in very good condition. Fold out plate on p.262 is incomplete as noted on collation. Text block very sound, crisp and clean throughout. Laid in is a paper cutting from 1972 titled ‘Ld. Rosebery starts as favourite’ written on Derby Day and outlining the 200-1 chance Paper Cup’s chances of victory. It appears that this book has been enjoyed by generations of equestrian fans.
