M.P and Canon. Conversations [on Church Legislation] 1858 and 1859: COPY BELONGING TO SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE OF COMMONS, JOHN EVELYN DENISON

Dialogues relating to 'A bill intituled An Act further to amend the Acts relating to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners and the Act concerning the management of episcopal and capitular estates in England', which was debated in July 1858. John Evelyn Denison (1800-1873) was Speaker of the House of Commons from 1857-1872 and was created Viscount Ossington in 1872. This scarce copy comes from his family home, Ossington Hall, Nottinghamshire.

In good condition. 7 serials bound as one dated 1858 and 1859 comprising seven conversations. In blue calf, gilt titled to front and ruled to edges. Spine in 6 compartments, decoratively embossed and titled in gilt to top over red ground. Shelf worn to edges. Text block edges marbled. Marbled endpapers front and rear in very good condition. Fly leaves and text clean and unmarked throughout. Handwritten notelet on House of Commons headed paper attached to front pastedown reads ‘Wm Selwyn left this book in library for the Speaker with his compliments’. Each booklet takes the form of a dialogue between an MP and a Canon. Titled Pall Mall July 1858, Library the House of Commons, Hyde Park, Oxford and Cambridge Club 1859 and House of Commons 1857.
