Northcote was a prominent late nineteenth century politician who spent nine years as Tory leader in the House of Commons from 1876 to 1885, almost a forgotten Tory leader in spite of the colossal statue of him in the Central Lobby of the House of Commons, seen by hundreds of visitors every day.
