Malcolm Montgomery (1855-1939) was an alumni of and for many years the principal classical coach in Trinity College, Dublin. This collection incorporates the testimonials that he prepared and head printed when he applied to become Professor of Greek in Queens College, Galway. Described in these written testimonials and letters as ‘the most distinguished Classic of his time, first in every competition’ he received numerous prizes including The Berkeley Gold Medal in Greek, The Vice Chancellor’s Gold Medal in Latin and The Gold Medal in Classics during his time at Trinity College, Dublin. Malcolm married Caroline Pim and they had 4 children; James, Charlotte, Laura and Malcolm Ronald.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION:

7-pp. printed booklet titled ‘Testimonials in Favour of Malcolm Montgomery M.A. Candidate for the Professorship of Greek in Queens College, Galway’. Dated 1902. Soft card wrappers in fair condition, foxed throughout. Outer wrappers detached from interior leaves which are held by staple to spine. Includes testimonials from TY Tyrrell, Fellow of Trinity College Dublin, LC Purser, Professor of Latin, TJ Bellingham Brady, Professor Extraordinary of Classical Literature.

21 hand written letters dated 1902, the majority on Trinity College, Dublin headed paper signed from tutors, colleagues and peers in support of his candidacy for position in Galway.

2 X 7-pp. printed booklets titled ‘Testimonials in favour of Malcolm Montgomery, M.A. candidate for the Professorship of Greek, in the University College of North Wales’. Card leaves stapled to top left corner. In good condition, age toned, very slight foxing. Includes testimonials from TY Tyrrell, Fellow of Trinity College Dublin, LC Purser, Professor of Latin, TJ Bellingham Brady, Professor Extraordinary of Classical Literature, JB Bury, Professor of Modern History in the University of Cambridge and John L Beare, Professor of Greek, Dublin.

3 hand written letters dated 1904 from tutors, colleagues and peers in support of his candidacy for position in Wales.

4 x original photographs including 1 casual portrait of Caroline Montgomery with family pet mounted on card. Studio half portrait of Malcolm Montgomery mounted on card. Head and shoulder smaller portraits of Malcolm and Caroline mounted next to each other on green card.

1 x b/w photograph of Montgomery family printed onto postcard, dated 1917 to reverse, naming Malcom, Caroline, James, Grace, Laura and Malcolm Ronald.

c. 100 densely and very affectionately hand written letters from both Malcolm and Caroline Montgomery to their daughter Laura spanning predominantly 1926 -1929 during a period in which the Montgomery’s seem to be resident in Heiden, Germany and their daughter in Colombo, then Ceylon. The Montgomery’s appear to be touring Europe from their Heiden base writing from various hotels and pensions throughout Italy, Switzerland and Germany. The letters are filled to bursting with news of family, friends and visitors, trips to Lake Como and the Duomo and everyday updates and advice. One return letter from Laura is written on Grand Oriental Hotel, Colombo, Ceylon headed paper. Their son Ronald is mentioned often in news. One return letter from him on The Asiatic Petroleum Co, (North China) Ltd, Wuhu, headed paper dated 1929 tells of his marriage to Dorothy. Letters dated 1936 written by Malcolm in a shaky hand from Belmont, Greenover, Brixham, Devon complete the correspondence.
