PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: South African edition published 1852. Original dust jacket protected by Brodart fold on book jacket cover and backed in a clear non-adhesive covering. Full page half tone to rear of dust jacket depicts Jan Christian Smuts. Spine panel ripped. 3 cm section to bottom missing. 2 cm section to middle stretching onto front panel missing and triangular section to top missing. Nicked to top, bottom and fore edge. Book within in good condition. Blue paper boards water stained to one corner front and rear. Shelf wear to edges. Spine panel sound, slightly worn to top and tail, ruled and lettered in gilt. Text block edges dusty in sound condition. End papers a little yellowed showing minimal water damage to bottom corner. Front free end paper signed by author ‘JC Smuts’ and his mother ‘Isie K Smuts’, dated 1952, the year of the publication of this South African edition. Full page half tone to verso of free end paper titled ‘General JC Smuts- Cape Town, 1949’. Text block in sound condition. Further 23 pp. of half tone illustrations and 7 b/w maps and facsimiles throughout. 568 pp. including biographical summary and index.
