A first edition, first printing of Brideshead Revisited by Evelyn Waugh owned and lightly annotated by his acquaintance and occasional correspondent, the critic Neville Braybrooke. Without dust wrapper. Red cloth covered boards in fair to good condition, age worn and spotted in parts, darkened to edges. Corners bruised; spine panel showing moderate wear to top and bottom, lettered decoratively in gilt. Text block edges in good condition. Front and rear end papers clean and unmarked. Front loose end paper displays previous owner’s signature to top right, ‘Neville Braybrooke 1945’. A small nick of paper has been lost to top right corner where two impressions of a paperclip remain visible - previously holding a letter from Waugh to Braybrooke. Half title page and title page clean, unmarked and in good condition. Text block sound throughout. A small clean tear approx. 0.5cm – 1cm in length runs through the tops of pp 11-87. Does not compromise the text. Likewise, a few small tears are evident between pp 66 – 97 along the bottom edge noted on collation. Occasional passages are annotated using a blue ink pen line to the margin. 304 pp complete.
