Attractive provenance relating to Samuel Webbe, friend of an early owner of the book whose borrowing of it lasted longer than expected.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Both works are bound as one within contemporary calf boards with gilt roll tool to all edges. Boards bruised to the corners, showing minor abrasions and wear. Spine in 6 gilt framed compartments, twin labels contain the authors’ and title details lettered in gilt on red ground. Front and rear boards cracking along spine hinges although text block very sound. Text block edges in good condition. Rear end papers clean and unmarked. Publisher’s label attached to top left front paste down reads ‘Sold by I Gawthorn. Bookseller, Publisher, Binder, Stationer. 5 Catherine St. Strand.’ Alongside is signed ‘Captain Hastings’ in black ink. Below is Hastings’ book stamp hand numbered 200. Internally moderate cracking to paper over front hinges but otherwise very sound. Front flyleaf contains notes written in pencil pertaining to page numbers within. To rear of frontispiece is pasted a small note reading ‘An apology…… borrowed of Captain Hastings 2 April 15. 1815!’ below which Captain Hastings has written that the above autograph is that of his good old friend S Webb the celebrated Glee composer. The frontispiece on the verso contains an engraving of the author Richard Watson, Bishop of Landaff titled ‘European Magazine’. The text An Apology for Christianity follows on. 1797. Sixth edition. Hand written in top right ‘J White Oxbridge’. 250 pp. collated and complete, crisp and clean throughout. Occasional hand written annotations and notes accompany the text.
