Dadie Rylands’ Marked-up Production Copy of JULIUS CAESAR

Annotated Cambridge edition of Julius Caesar owned by the life long Shakespearian George ‘Dadie’ Rylands who began directing Shakespeare at school, oversaw professional recordings of the plays at Cambridge and schooled in Shakespeare some of the leading actors of the twentieth century. In association with the Marlowe Society and a group of professional actors Rylands directed a series of professional audio recordings of the plays - his annotations to this text suggests it might relate to his recording of Julius Caesar.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION:

Julius Caesar, 1956 CUP reprint, with ‘RYLANDS’ on the dustjacket. DR has written a cast list on the jacket’s front flap, continuing onto the first flyleaf and through the Character list. Textual annotation by way of asterisks and verbal annotation such as ‘Brutus, more Power and Pace’ (3.1.183) - some of the annotations feel like more like commentary made while involved in rehearsal as well as annotation to help with verbal emphasis, suggesting the link to the Argo recording.

GEORGE RYLANDS (23.10.1902 - 16.01.1999) was an English literary critic, scholar, dramatist, educated at Eton and as early as his schooldays he directed productions of Twelfth Night and A Winter’s Tale. He taught at King’s College in Cambridge for many years and as a director, he staged many productions of Shakespeare’s plays for the Marlowe Dramatic Society from 1929 till the 1960s. In 1957–1965 he worked on a recording of the complete works of William Shakespeare for the British Council.
