Rare Glaswegian almanac produced by the founder of the Glasgow Herald, John Mennons. This copy has the advantage of 12 pages of expert notes made in the late 1780s by a Glasgow cloth maker about the weaving and pricing of socks, gloves and handkerchieves.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Contemporary calf binding, worn but sound, with a pocket within the lower board. Late 19th century inscription of ‘John Easton Black... Greenock’ to the second flyleaf. Browning and light soiling to early leaves but the almanac collates complete: pp 192, with blank six leaves to the rear containing the MS notes. Mennons’ text deals with every aspect of Scottish life, listing Professors at all the Universities, hundreds of civic and clerical figures across Scotland - and even a few in England and north America. The writer of the manuscript notes has created several tables to record hundreds of prices for worsted and cotton in 1786 and subsequent years; he (probably) adds a technical set of instructions for glove making: ‘fore finger No 20, 16 leads; No 22, 18 leads; No 24, 19 leads...’ and a set of specific values: ‘Mr Morrice’s prices... Mr Dale’s Prices’. No indication of the writer’s name but this is the work of a professional within the weaving and haberdashery world of 1780s Glasgow.

CONTEXT The earliest edition of Mennon’s Glasgow Almanac dates from a year earlier in 1784; one copy only of this edition survives at Strathclyde; not in ESTC or NLS. Mennons (1747-1818) served his apprenticeship at the Edinburgh Courant, going on to publish several periodicals before moving to Glasgow where he founded the Glasgow Advertiser in 1783 - later The Herald - the eighth oldest daily newspaper in the world.
