Balmoral Castle ‘Programme of Pipe Music’, signed by the Balmoral Piper, Henry Forsyth.

Small cream card embossed with George VI’s cipher in gilt; gold edges and the programme of music for 8th August, 1938. The text has been printed in some way but Forsyth’s signature is in his hand.

August 1938 was the first Royal family gathering after the Coronation the previous year of George VI and the family, along with the King and Queen’s daughters, Elizabeth and Margaret, arrived at Aberdeen by sea for their annual visit on August 4th - apparently thrilling the young princesses. Despite a semblance of normality the threat of war was already looming and Prime Minister Nevil Chamberlain would visit Balmoral several times that summer to brief the King on the German threat to Czechoslovakia.
