A presentation copy given to the best student in French at the women-only Queen Margaret College, Glasgow University, 1899-1900

Two attractively bound volumes in quarter brown roan over marbled boards, rubbing to outer hinges; top edge gilt; marbled endpapers and a long presentation inscription on the second flyleaf. Written by Charles Martin of Glasgow University this explains that these volumes were presented by the Parisian committee of the ‘Societe Franco-ecossaise.... a Mademoiselle Jane J Robertson, lui a obtenu le No 1 dane le concourse de fin d’annnee scolaire 1899-1900. Faite a l’University de Glasgow, Queen Margaret College ce 23 Mars 1900 Charles Martin’ - Miss Robertson had come top in her year for French studies and this was her prize. Some brown spotting throughout, otherwise a very good copy.

A lovely memento of Scotland’s historic links with France and testimony to the work done for women’s education in 19th century Glasgow.
