Extra-illustrated in the 19th century with copper engravings by Gerard Van der Gucht and John Pine which were taken from earlier 18th century editions of this book including a portrait of the author.

Fourth Edition of this satire by Ned Ward bound in pretty contemporary century calf, with nineteenth century repairs at the top and tail of both spines and 19th century endpapers. All edges red. The 19th century book binder who repaired the volumes has inserted Gucht’s portrait of the author, in a slightly smaller format. Distributed through the text there are a further 4 images by Pine in the first volume including a portrait of Corydon and Phyllis and the second volume has a further 3 engravings by Pine and one more by Gucht. The engravings by John Pine first appeared in the edition of 1723 and are regarded as apprentice works by this influential designer.

A satirist and publican Ned Ward (1667-1731) achieved significant success in early Georgian London with his London Spy and other publications presenting the seamier side of life.
