Emmanuel Regis (1855-1918) studied medicine in Paris where he became Professor at the Saine Anne Psychiatric Hospital. It is on this professional experience that he draws for his understanding of Hamlet: ‘le type de ces neurastheniques a pessimise misanthropique...’ Having recently attended Bernhardt’s performance in Bordeaux he challenges her famously youthful and energetic reading of the tragic Prince whilst still admiring it as ‘tres remarquable, je le repete...’
