Full contemporary calf, spine relaid; no front pastedowns or endpapers. ‘To the owner 1757’ written on the verso of the title page. Present are: pp1-12; pp17-41; pp45-88; pp93-224; pp229-242; pp245-246; pp251-260; pp265-298; pp301-6, long tear along foreedge; around page 30 several pages with tears up from the gutter; top of page 41 removed; chunk from foreedge p109; p128-9 penmanship; lower corner missing from p147; p159; p185 top corner; p335 lower corner; p337 half page. Final flyleaf has ownership inscription of William Charnhill(?) Very few institutional holdings: BLx2; Florida; Harvard.

Allan Ramsay (1684-1758) was born at Leadhills, Lanarkshire, where he became interested in Scottish folklore and poetry. In his late teens, he moved to Edinburgh where he established a flourishing career as a poet and contributor to the Scottish Enlightenment.
