Undergraduate photo album recording life at Newnham College from 1920-1923 with an emphasis on hockey and rowing as well as the visit of Crown Prince Hirohito to Cambridge in 1921.

Oatmeal cloth binding (24x19.5cm); bookseller’s ticket to the front pastedown, ‘The Ancient House Bookshop and Library, Ipswich’; 38 greenish-grey card leaves with 288 photographs mounted recto and verso, 2 letters (one mimeographed note from Blanche Athena Clough about the arrival of ‘the Crown Prince of Japan’ in college; and a handwritten note by Clough asking for ‘a large concourse of students to help in welcoming H.J.H. today and to line his route... I have made enquiries about photographing and I understand this may be done only it must be done discreetly...’) with 2 postcards of the College laid in.

The anonymous album maker seems to have been an undergraduate at the college from 1920-1923. She has used her album to record sporting events within the College, usually annotating the images in white ink, sometimes with full names ‘Aubrey Barrow’, ‘Gwen French’, ‘Elizabeth Glover’ etc; often with initials. There are photos of the women’s Varsity Hockey Match, 1921; Newnham College Boat Club VIIIs, on and off the river; 2 photos of the Japanese Crown Prince in College (as well as the 2 letters); the Putney Race between L.S.M.W (London School of Medicine for Women) and the Newnham VIII (these races were among the earliest inter-university competitions for women’s VIIIs). Our album maker records the Long Vac of 1921; Varsity Hockey Match, 1922; two reading parties at Blagdon in Somerset; a few photographs of college rooms; ‘The Girton Match’ and a single page of photographs of senior members of the college: ‘Miss Richardson. Miss Chrystal, Miss Allison, Miss Clough’.
