From John Cunliffe’s library a first pocket edition of Hardy’s masterpiece; Tess of The D’urbervilles, in burgundy cloth publisher’s binding with gilt lettering to upper board and spine as well as blind stamp decoration to upper board. Gilt top edge. Binding in very good condition with slight bumping to corners, fading to spine and some markings to lower board. Browning to end papers. Map of Wessex printed by R. & R. Clark Limited, Edinburgh after last page of text. Ownership signature to the upper pastedown by Cunliffe as well as a Henry James quote in his hand to the upper pastedown. Cunliffe is best remembered as the creator of Postman Pat.
