Hunting Scene - with Morris Minor! - Original Artwork

(24x14cm) Gouache given by the artist to the creator of Captain Pugwash, John Ryan. Inscribed along the tail of the image in pencil: ‘for John [Ryan] from Steven (Appleby) 1993’. Executed in gouache on thick art card ncilled with a line to the right of the image, probably intended for cropping. The image shows a hunt in full flow, at the centre of things a Morris Minor. Steven Appleby is one of Britain's leading cartoonist who created the serial 'Small Birds Singing' and has published several books, including 'Steven Appleby's Normal Life' and 'Alien Invasion'.

John Ryan (1921– 2009) was a British animator and cartoonist, best remembered for his character Captain Pugwash which began as a comic strip which spawned books and a TV series which was animated by Ryan in real time using a system of cut-out characters and boats, moved by hidden cardboard levers. We have acquired several of these animation models alongside the Pugwash artwork at a recent sale of items from Ryan’s estate.
