An early presentation copy to a British Member of Parliament of Hayek’s classic account of the perils of state control.

Third impression of June 1944, the same year as the first edition of 1944, bound in the original grey black boards, sunned around the edges. The ownership signature of the Independent Conservative MP ‘D.L. Lipson. Cheltenham’ appears on the front pastedown. Laid in is a mimeographed letter from a Lancashire businessman, ‘A Chadwick’ of The Fishbrook Dyeing Co in Bolton, dated September 1944, urging the recipient to follow Hayek in making a ‘hard study of the causes and under-lying reasons’ for the recent wars as ‘The writer... feels that the author of this book “The Road to Serfdom” has done a public service... on the problems which lie immediately ahead of our Legislators.’ Lipson’s address at the House of Commons is typed below the text.

Hayek's advocacy of the invisible hand of the market over the dead hand of the state was an immediate success on publication and this copy is a fascinating testimony to the way in which its power to persuade was quickly understood and harnessed.
