pp 40 & 100 blanks. Manuscript recipe book owned by the Liverpool abolitionist and historian William Roscoe whose recipes were entered into the book a generation after his death, probably by one of his daughters-in-law. Neat Regency period quarto manuscript book bound in decorative green cloth with 'W.m Roscoe Book' in black ink to the front pastedown. Roscoe himself died in 1831 and opposite his inscription is the later title 'Mrs Roscoe's Confectionary Book Dec 28th 1868' followed by about 40 pages of manuscript entries with a dozen leaves of clippings from Notes and Queries. The book includes recipes for Orange Marmalade, Drop Cakes, Blanc Mange, Cheese Cake, Cumberland Sauce, Pasta Alla Turca, Fillets of Anchovy, Piccalilia. At the other end of the book are recorded several methods for embroidery including 'Bead Mats' and 'Knitted Lace' and the menu of a 'Dinner given by Mr Thomas Morris on the coming of age of his Son' including 'Stewed Pigeons. Stuffed Tomatoes... Saddle Mutton...' William Roscoe is a major figure in British abolitionist history and revered in his native Liverpool. It seems very possible to identify which member of his extended family completed this manuscript.
