[vii] pp 358 [xxi] [1] Extra illustrated by James Aldous around 1850 with a sequence of engravings including seventeenth century portraits of Phillip II of Spain and a portrait of Sir Francis Bacon. Worn black morocco binding, repairs to hinges, strengthening to inner hinges with black cloth. Red endpapers. Ownership signature of Henry and a much later gift inscription on endpaper: 'This old book of your great grandfather James Aldous... dear Grandson Talbot Noble - June 1st 1921.' Inserted plates include a facsimile of a leaf from the Lindisfarne Gospels, a fold-out engraving of 'The Shrine of Arch-bishop Becket' engraved by J Cole, 'Queen Eleanor' 1788 by V & R Green; a seventeenth century engraving of 'The true poraiture of Judge Littleton the famous English Lawyer'; an engraving of the execution of Edmund Campion engraved by Frederik Bouttats the Younger; engravings of Edmund Spenser, of Nicholas Hilliard [?] by James Basire, Henry Cornelius Vroom, painted by I Oliver engraved by T Chambars and most strikingly, 'Phillipus II... Hispaniarum Indiarum... Rex Anno 1559' - probably a seventeenth century engraving, and a seated portrait from the same portrait of Francis Bacon. A very rewarding volume - extra postage charges may apply as this is a heavy volume.
