[viii] pp370 [lxvii] Appendix containing an Inquiry into the Origin of Paradise Lost. The book is bound in contemporary calf with a brown morocco label, raised bands, gilt tooling and embossed decoration. Very good, leather is rubbed to edges and corners with a short tear to the head of the spine, the boards are fresh; occasional spotting to the text, especially to the facsimile of Milton's signature opposite page 84. Ownership signature to front end paper "C Merivale 1843", presumably the Very Reverend Charles Merivale, Dean of Ely Cathedral, who studied at St John's College, Cambridge and was one of the instigators of the Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race in 1829.
