'To the Editor of The Christian Observer': On the Teaching of Mathematics: The Christian Observer, Conducted by Members of the Established Church for the Year 1821

viii, pp 1-400 John Henry Newman's first academic publication which was printed in May 1821 when he broke down during his final exams at Trinity College, Oxford, in the journal, The Christian Observer. The volume is bound in early blue morocco over marbled boards, rubbed but square and handsomely done with gilt spine lettering. Apart from a little foxing the text is fine. This volume contains the half year's issues of the Christian Observer from 1821 with Newman's article printed in the May issue on pages 293-295. In it Newman addresses the relationship between mathematics and belief, noting that 'Mathematical studies, it has been often said, prepare the mind for scepticism in religion.' The anonymously written article is signed simply 'A.' John Henry Newman, later Cardinal Newman, was beatified in 2010 during the visit of Pope Benedict XVI to the United Kingdom; his canonisation is widely anticipated. Blehl B7a.
