A 19th century commonplace book by members of the Ord family. The unpublished manuscript covers over half of the book; numbered pages 1-47 are written by one neat hand in German, a further 60 pages of the notebook are completed in English by several different authors. This includes sections on homeopathy, the beauty of women and the language of the handkerchief. There is also a short journal "kept by William Ord during a tour through part of Sweden in company with Richard Smith of Wiltshire during our residence at Lubeck 1844". The final entry dated 1873 is the inscription of Richard Birkett's tombstone in Martindale Church Yard deciphered by R Denton, C Wright and H M Ord. The notebook is good plus in rubbed and stained buckram, worn to the corners and spine, marbled end papers and clean unlined pages in a firm binding. Laid in: ephemera including a list of Liverpool to Santander steamboats and a Spanish hotel receipt dated 1864, a riddle about farmers and ploughs, a newspaper account of the death of Lord Palmerston, and a pretty watercolour of a pastoral scene with a windmill. A fascinating collection.
