Album: Liber Amicorum - Friendship Book of Cromwell Stuart, son of Peter Stuart, the 'Ditton Doctor'

[ff] 25 Oblong album, missing rear cover, with the calligraphic ownership inscription on behalf of ten year old Cromwell Stuart, son of Peter Stuart of Seaforth (north of Liverpool) the Lancashire shipowner and lay homeopath. Cromwell Stuart was born in 1847 (dying in South Africa at 22) with most of the inscribed pages dating from about a decade later. Presumably this was a gift from his parents which Peter took with him to Germany where most of the inscribed pages were undertaken, usually offering a motto and inscription below, sometimes with a drawing. Signers include Jose Francis da Sehra, G J F Bruel, Albert Knolcke, Rothmeyer, Ernst Sengstack, August von Bothmer, Louise Evers, Magnus Mansfeldt, F F Vollmer, Marie Hogreive. The last half dozen of pages were executed at Seaforth.
