A Father’s Legacy to His Daughters. By the Late Dr. Gregory of Edinburgh. A New Edition

A tantalising book bearing a beautifully executed pen and watercolour bookplate of one ‘Mary Hogarth’, probably dating from around 1800. The woman pictured appears to lean against an oval garland which contains her name: ‘Mary Hogarth’. Wearing an Empire waist dress and with a book dangling from her right hand, the artwork is accomplished in the extreme but we have identified neither artist nor the elusive Mary Hogarth who cannot be the artist William Hogarth’s wife on account of the date of the bookplate.
