The young Madeleine L’Engle’s sophomore copy of More’s Utopia, annotated throughout while she studied at Smith College. L’Engle’s ownership inscription appears on the first pastedown: ‘Madeleine L’Engle Camp, September, 1938’. In her pencilled annotations she draws attention to a ‘tall tale’ (p17), passages ‘on peace’ (germane to 1938) and More’s treatment of those who steal: ‘this attitude toward thieves unheard of in More’s day’. Most of L’Engle’s annotation is concentrated on the first book of Utopia. Altogether a fascinating text from the library of a future writer of speculative fiction.

Madeleine L’Engle Camp (1918-2007) was a writer of fiction, non-fiction and poetry, renowned for her speculative novel A Wrinkle in Time.

DESCRIPTION: Duodecimo, blue cloth; a very good copy.
