Single volume acquired by the young Madeleine L’Engle in her late teens and bearing her thoughtful reflections on Shakespeare’s art. The first scene has a long passage in L’Engle’s hand on Shakespeare’s use of end-stopped lines and the influence of Christopher Marlowe, written at a level suggesting she probably made use of this text while at Smith College. In later annotations she delights in Shakespeare’s puns, his ‘marvellous’ use of setting without scenery and ‘the kind of rhetoric that the Elizabethan audience adored but which may bore us.’ The annotations continue through the text with additional notes to the final blanks, making it a fascinating resource for anyone wanting to understand the development of the young writer.

Madeleine L’Engle Camp (1918-2007) was a writer of fiction, non-fiction and poetry, renowned for her speculative novel A Wrinkle in Time.

DESCRIPTION: Duodecimo, textured green cloth; iscribed in ink to the pictorial front pastedown: ‘Madeleine L’Engle Camp “Bird-in-Hand Court”’. Annotated throughout.
