Scientific and Arithmetical Schoolboy Manuscript from Mr. Gibson’s Whitby School

Youthful scholar J. Harrison’s manuscript of advanced arithmetic and scientific exercises from Mr. Gibson’s Whitby School. There is no record of Mr Gibson’s school but it is likely to have been a private academy tailoring its curriculum to practical skills in a booming maritime and industrial region.

Hand drawn, decorative title page inscribed ‘Arithmetic by J.Harrison’; written to rectos and versos throughout; first 4pp feature ornate cursive headings and consider reductions and fractions; remaining leaves densely penned with advanced notes and tables on chemical analysis, procedures and examinations. The inclusion of the use of bunsen burner tests dates the book to c1855.

Quarter marbled boards over black roan spine very good. Just splitting over rear gutters, remaining entirely sound otherwise. Clean, crisp and entirely legible throughout. 30pp.
