Fiercely anti clerical typed manuscript which captures a society beginning to transition away from unquestioning religious observance. The author ‘J.H. Walters’, explicitly states their mission to expose ‘the grosser faults and fallacies’ of contemporary Christianity, the ‘insincerity of its priesthood’ and the ‘baneful effects’ of religion on national advancement. Facing severe institutional pushback and strict publisher censorship this unpublished manuscript simply failed to find a contemporary commercial market.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Hardback, black roan boards very good; titled in gilt to spine; decorative endpapers unmarked, just cracking over front gutters; leaves 4 and 13 bound out of order and leaves 11 and 12 loose within text block which is otherwise entirely clean and sound. 196pp. c20000 words. Typed to versos throughout; edited, crossed out and added to in a contemporary hand. Quotes extracts from the greatest thinkers and writers of the 19th century including T.H. Huxley, David Hume, Matthew Arnold, Dr J.W. Draper and Sir Richard Burton.
