A full page hand painted frontispiece opens the first story titled ‘The King’s Man’ (48pp) which takes the form of a classic historical adventure set in 1651 following the Battle of Worcester. Following shorter stories span different eras and genres including those in the style of a French melodrama, a pastoral adventure and an Edwardian psychological tale. During the 1950s and 1960s Aubrey Feist achieved historical recognition for writing popular children's adventure novels and historical fiction. Some of his notable published works include Spread Eagle and the play Black Cabinet. He also worked as a writer for early television, contributing to productions like the 1958 series Ivanhoe.
